2024 Annual Meeting
The program for the 2024 National Rural ITS Conference will be integrated into the ITE Annual Meeting and Exhibition held July 21-24, 2024 at the Philadelphia Marriott. This year’s conference theme is Creating Safer, Smarter Mobility. Transportation is a focal point for accessibility whether across the street, across town, around the metro area or state to state for work, school, shopping; people walk, drive, bike, take transit, deliver goods from one place to another. Transportation technologies play a significant role in making it all work safely.
The conference will cover emerging issues from across the transportation industry including a focus on transportation safety considerations and underserved communities as well as exploration of connecting fiscal resources to agencies that need them. In addition to traditional ITS topics of interest to transportation professionals, this event will bring together both traditional and non-traditional users to address issues affecting rural and small communities.
The rich and dynamic program for the ITE Annual Meeting spans 13 themed tracks outside of rural ITS catering to professionals across various specialties, from planners and engineers to data scientists and educators
Specific sessions in Advancing Rural Intelligent Transportation Systems track during the ITE 2024 Annual Meeting program are highlighted below within the overall program:
Joint ITE International and Mid-Colonial Annual Meeting and Exhibition
Sunday, July 21
1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Workshops
- Dealing With All the Front-End Stuff: How to Jump Start ITS Projects for Small and Rural Communities (NRITS)
Grand Ballroom Salon A (Fee – Complementary)
3.5 PDH Credits
Rural agencies face different challenges deploying ITS technologies from their urban and suburban counterparts. Deployments of ITS technologies can be low-cost solutions for rural agencies to solve safety and mobility challenges in their communities.
Join USDOT for a workshop covering critical topics in the ITS deployment lifecycle, including planning, design, operations, and maintenance specifically focused on rural applications, as well as federal funding opportunities and deployment strategies. This workshop will help deployers jump start ITS projects by featuring a combination of best practices presentations from subject matter experts, success stories, and lessons learned from on–the–ground rural ITS deployments. Participants will participate in interactive activities and share opportunities and best practices for estimating benefits and outcomes and overcoming challenges such as staffing limitations and required coordination. Attendees will benefit from Q&A time, peer networking and take-home resources to bring back to their agencies and apply to their work. In turn, USDOT will gather feedback to incorporate into future initiatives and follow-up.
Learning Objectives:
-
- Describe the role of ITS in addressing transportation challenges facing rural areas
- Describe factors to consider when planning rural ITS projects and/or applying for grants
- Describe some of the strategies employed by successful rural ITS deployments
- Explain the value of project planning prior for successful ITS deployments
- Identify USDOT resources available to potential deployers at all stages of the deployment lifecycle
